Me, Myself & AI: A new Europe-wide campaign from Vodafone Foundation to help young people navigate the opportunities and risks presented by AI
22/10/2024
Young people across Europe will be able to get trusted and inspiring information about AI from a series of 60 entertaining social media shorts launched by Vodafone Foundation.
The new Vodafone Foundation campaign called ‘Me Myself & AI’ is a series of videos, memes, background information and practical tips shared acrossTikTok and YouTube in the UK, Portugal, Spain, Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Albania and Romania.
The campaign addresses the escalating challenge for young people and their relationship with AI, identified in a growing body of research2. The daily influence of AI – whether consciously through apps such as ChatGPT, or subconsciously through AI tools from social media platforms – leaves many confused about how to navigate or whether to trust this fast-growing technology.
‘Me Myself & AI’ is designed to help young people better understand the mechanisms, risks and opportunities associated with AI, as well as providing content that could help support educators across the globe. The campaign will also help reach young people from less privileged backgrounds who might otherwise have limited access to information or education about AI.
Many teachers are increasingly under pressure to upweight the presence of AI in their curriculum. For example, a policy paper from the UK’s Department for Education (DfE) in October 2023 stated that the education sector “needs to teach students how to use emerging technologies, such as generative AI, safely and appropriately.”
Speaking about the Me, Myself & AI campaign, Joakim Reiter, Chief External and Corporate Affairs Officer at Vodafone and Trustee at Vodafone Foundation, said: “Young people use and adapt to new technologies faster than most, and schools often struggle to keep up with these trends. This campaign empowers young people across Europe to think about and use AI in a creative yet responsible way. By being better informed about how the technology works, young people can weigh up any risks that AI may pose.”
Some of the topics that will be covered by the video shorts as part of the campaign include:
How does AI technology work?
Where does the data used for AI applications come from?
What risks does the use of AI present?
Professor Dr Gergana Vladova, Chair of Computer Science Education/Computer Science and Society at Humboldt-Universität Berlin, was involved in the campaign development to ensure that the concepts are relevant to young people.
‘Me, Myself and AI’ is part of the Kliick initiative, a pan-European Vodafone Foundation project to tackle issues affecting young people navigating the digital world. It supportsVodafone Foundation’s wider programmes to provide digital skills for life, including Skills Upload Jr, the Pan-European initiative to empower educators and students in the self-confident, creative and critical use of digital technologies.
